Dear all:

I use Bookends in conjunction with Devonthink (DT). In DT I store my PDFs of articles in folders named with a custom citation I created. Like so:

Screen Shot 2012-05-30 at 09.50.08 .png (41.48 KiB) Viewed 6004 times
You can see that my custom citation is {Buxton, “Mourning for Sidney,” 49187}. Below, the hyperlink _ Falco, “Instant Artifacts,” 75866 _ takes you straight to the Bookmarks entry.

I found that Unique IDs really disambiguate entries in the scanning process. And the short title (which I always manually enter myself) helps me remember what the article (&c.) is about.

I've now migrated to a new computer and can't remember how I created that custom citation. Can anyone help? I've created a new format in the Formats Manager -- see here:

But "Unique ID" isn't one of the fields I can enter.

One workaround: Is there any way to make the Unique ID populate one of my unused "Additional Fields" (e.g. user20)?

Many thanks,
Michael U.

You can output the unique id (and a lot of other non-text information) in a format. See the Special Characters pop-up menu to the right of the Fields pop-up that you are looking at. Use @ to represent the unique id.

Michael,

I've been thinking about using a similar style of citation within DT. What do you use to generate the unique IDs?

thanks!

Please see and use the Special Characters pop-up menu for all the metacharacters available in formats.
