Bookends hanging for minutes at a time

Post by kjmatthews »

My installation of Bookends (11.3.2 and 11.3.3) recently began hanging for minutes at a time. It first hangs on startup, and then somewhat randomly as long as the application is open. It does not seem to be related to whether a library is open or not; regardless, I have rebuilt and repaired my library, which contains 919 references.

I have trashed the whole application, along with preference files and the Application Support folder. The application hung as I have described one first launch after doing so, before I was even able to copy my registration number.

Around the same time (perhaps unrelatedly), the "verify citations" button on Mellel began to show as grayed out, except immediately after restarting my computer.

What should I do about this?

Update: I seem to have done something to fix the hanging problem, but the "Verify Citations" button in Mellel is still grayed out. I'm assuming that this is a problem for the Redlers.

I suspect you're using OS 10.8.2. If so, there is a known bug in the OS affecting AppleEvents that can cause problems between Mellel and Bookends. Logging out/in fixes it (at least temporarily), as does a reboot. There is apparently another issue with Mellel on the Mac App Store (not from RedleX direct) that the Redlers are working on.

I am indeed using 10.8.2. This bug is almost comically ill-timed, as my dissertation is due in 5 days. Almost. Thankfully there is a workaround.

It would seem I spoke too soon about the problem with Bookends hanging. It happens inconsistently on startup and sporadically while the application is running (usually after I attempt to do something). Is this a known issue as well?

No, no known hang issues except when dealing with scanning (where AppleEvents are used -- and the solution is logout/login). Try rebooting your Mac in any case, sometimes bizarre and non reproducible problems are fixed by this.
