Hello,
As a scientist trying to keep up with the relevant literature, I want to focus more on reading and less on importing my references of interest. I am wondering if anyone has developed any scripts to automate the reference importing process with Bookends? I am exploring how I might use Keyboard Maestro to speed this process along.
I am interested in starting with a .pdf file:
1. Import the reference
2. Attach the .pdf to the reference
3. Mark the reference with a given color (blue). I later use a smart group to go through and read all the references I have imported.
Any thoughts, ideas, scripts would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Mike
Automating Reference Import into Bookends
Re: Automating Reference Import into Bookends
I don't have a script for you, but here's one way:
1. Create a static group: new refs (or whatever)
2. Drag and drop a pdf onto it.
3. Check "Attach this file to a new reference and autocomplete". If you're lucky, a doi will be found and the ref imported automatically. If not, you can use Autocomplete Paper to find the metadata.
4. Read the papers in that group, and remove from that group when done.

P.S. I see a highlighting bug with this (cosmetic only) that I'll fix.

Re: Automating Reference Import into Bookends
Hi Jon,
I tried your suggestion with three references. The doi was found for two references, but not for the other. All were imported into my database (Good). But none were found in the Static Group (Bad).
I was able to get single files to attach (occasionally), but there is something odd about selecting the static group (it seems like it cannot be unselected?). I will email support - because I think you suggestion will work for what I am trying to do.

Re: Automating Reference Import into Bookends
It works with single pdfs, every time (not occasionally). Whether it can find a doi in the pdf and locate it online is another matter, success based on things Bookends can't control. That's were autocomplete paper comes in.
I mentioned the cosmetic bug in my last post in this thread:

As I promised, it's now fixed.
