Bookends on Mac App Store

Post by hrashid »

I am very excited about the release of BE 12 and have been upgrading since v. 9.

I am thinking of getting it via MAS, to simplify my application management, and don't mind paying the full price for the new version. The program has been invaluable to me, and Jon got a shout out in my dissertation acknowledgments for the work he put in to help me get the document in tip-top shape.

However, before I purchase through MAS, I just want to check if there are any differences in the two versions of the app, or any idiosyncrasies that people have discovered.

Thanks,
Hussein

The apps are pretty much identical (there are some things we had to remove, like Check For Updates, but the functional code is now identical). Note that this may not always be the case. For example, for Bookends 11 we had to remove the check for unicode normalization problems from the MAS version because Apple objected to the APIs used (it has been restored in 12). Finally, realize that updates and bug fixes will always be delayed in the MAS version (and there are no silent updates). So if you have a problem that is fixed, you'll have to wait longer to get the update (remember, if you buy from the MAS you have to use versions downloaded from the MAS, not us). Having said all that, I think you're better off getting Bookends from us, but that's your choice.

We have a FAQ about this

I bought mine from the Apple Store without realizing the differences btw the Apple and Sonny dls. Is it possible at all to switch (uninstall Apple Store dl and install from Sonny)?

No, sorry, they're entirely different. For example, Apple doesn't tell us who bought from the MAS, it's their information. FWIW, the review process is getting faster, and 12.1 is available from them now.
