Double page numbers

Post by NewBookendsUser »

Hi everyone,

I encountered the following problem: When I enter a journal article in BE that appeared at several pages in the same volume, I get (after entering 322-328; 456-463)

322[en dah]328; 456

instead of

322[en dash]8; 456[en dash]63

in my formatted entry.

In my costum format, I have p[en dash] for the page range and set it to abbreviate last page. Any solutions?

This is for a bibliography, right, not cited pages? I'll look into it, but I think this may be expected. When you put the dash (p-) you're telling Bookends to modify the second number based on the setting in the format. When what follows the dash is not a number, you'll get undefined results.

Perhaps I could add a feature where placing a comma after the pages would tell Bookends to leave them as entered (just like we have for authors and titles)?

Hi,

exactly, it's for bibliographies. It's no big problem at all (the first instance I had in over 400 references), but something like you described would be great nevertheless - just to make BE even a bit more perfect :) Some way to have on the occasion page numbers as entered would fit the purpose!

Thanks, Hans

Sounds like a good solution!

BTW, in the format did you try telling Bookends to leave the "last page as entered"? It's a popup menu option.

Welcome back!
Yes, I know about that option, but it would'nt really do the job for me, because I always enter the full page numbers (just for the case I once need them) but always use abbreviated numbers in my formats (as by now) ... But I could create an additional format just for this kind of reference, that's true.

Just checking to see if the other solution, adding a comma at the end, was redundant (it is, but you want an ad hoc solution...).

To be honest, I really do not need an ad hoc solution; as I said before, I have only one case in over 400 references where it is a "problem", and just wanted to ask whether there was any solution I just didn't know about ... So: there's no need for any ad hoc solution at all, and I'll just use the option of creating an extra format just for these cases.

The comma at the end to suppress formatting would be a pretty easy ad hoc solution to add, but if you think that's not necessary (and others agree) it's one less thing to do.

I just tried it with a comma after the pages and they are left as they are in the bibliographic entry (is it already working? ... I'm confused now ...). With regard to the rareness of these "problem cases" I'm perfectly fine if it stays as it is!

No, it's not implemented, I was thinking of adding it for 12.0.5. But I'll hold off now. Thanks for the feedback.

You're welcome! But ... It's already working :?: I add the comma after the pages and they stay exactly as they are, whatever I type before the comma ... Or am I the victim of a serious misunderstanding again?

Well I'll be darned. I had added that feature already, looks like in 12.0, and it's in the User Guide. I'm smarter (or dumber) than I thought...
