I am considering moving from EndNote to Bookends. I have been using EndNote with Dropbox to keep a single database of my bibliography for use on two Macs. I know there has been some discussion of this some time ago, but I'd like to know if there is a problem in having your Bookends 12 database in Dropbox.
Are there other files besides the basic database (such as Library1.bdb) that you need to put into your Dropbox for it to work properly on both Macs?
I understand that you should have only one turned on at a time in order to prevent conflicts in syncing.
Besides setting the Bookends preference to the Dropbox location and starting the database in the Dropbox folder, is there anything else I would need to do? By the way, this can be done with EndNote, which is in other ways a fairly cumbersome system.
Thanks.
Dropbox integration
Re: Dropbox integration
There is no problem using DropBox to sync the database (or you could use Bookends Sync for the data, and DropBox for the attachments). But you can't sync formats, preferences, etc. with DropBox. They are in ~/Library/Application Support/Bookends, and Bookends expects to find them there.

Re: Dropbox integration
To pick up on Jon's comment: although there is a well-documented way to sync files outside the ~/Dropbox folder using symlinks, syncing Bookends formats or preferences in this manner will likely result in Bookends crashes. Still, as Jon said, you may use Dropbox to sync the database and attachments.
