Transformation different in right-click menu

Post by Nhaps »

When I want to change a title to title case in Global Change, Transformation, it takes into consideration the exception list in Scan Bib under preferences, but Transformation in the contextual menu (right-click) does not. How to do it?

The Transformations menu is handled by the OS, not Bookends, just like the other options at the bottom of the hierarchical menu (Spelling and below). It knows nothing about exceptions (or about Bookends, for that matter). If you want Bookends to handle this, use Global Change, which you can apply to the selected reference if you don't want it to be truly global.

BTW, you probably should NOT do this. Title Case is handled at the level of the format. Unless you are not using a format to output the reference, leave the field in Sentence case (or whatever it was) and let the format change it to whatever you want.

Thanks for the reminder, it solved my problem partially, saving a click or two.
1. I set format to Title Case in Biblio, Formats
2. When I import references coming in Sentence case,
3. I have to turn them into Title Case nonetheless,
4. Because I set my PDF-dragging to copy the exact reference title (and case)
5. So I go to Preview/Formatted Reference and copy and paste it.
This is a little faster than using Global Change.

Why do you have to turn them into Title Case in the database itself? Do you need to the title to be in Title Case in some operation that doesn't go through the formatter? If not, it's pointless

The general principle is this -- it makes no difference how you store the title (lowercase, uppercase, Sentence case, whatever) if you're going to use that metadata in a format. The format will override whatever is stored in the database.

Do you see?

Yes, I know that the format will override. But I have all my PDFs named in Title Case, that's the reason. As I attach them I have BE rename them first by the LaTex Key (user1) followed by (hyphen, space) title in Title case.

Then, if I understand correctly, you're using a format to rename the PDFs. If so, in that format tell Bookends to use Title Case. If you are specifying Title Case in the format you use to rename the PDF and it's not working, please contact tech support.

Thank you! Yes, I am using for the first time a format to rename my PDFs, and you helped me go back to it to change it. One detail is that BE, because of OS, replaces ":" with "-" in the title, and I want it to rather use "." as a replacement.

Good. Then leave the titles in the reference just as they were imported. Have the format you are using make the title in Title Case.
