Book Reviews

Post by Nhaps »

I know there's Show With Chapters to see together volume and its chapters. But how can I setup book reviews to be called up when I search for book title/author?

You could set a Review : Work Reviewed relationship up in the link inspector. Then when you set the parent in the Link Inspector to the book, you'll see all the reviews about it (in the Link Inspector). If you want to work with them all, Mark All (in the Link Inspector) and they'll be added to the Hits group.

Thanks! Would there be a second way of doing this as well?

That seems a pretty good way to me. There are obviously lots of alternatives to relate references (use color labels, create static groups, create smart groups, etc.). Take your pick.

Thanks again. The choice I have in mind is to search for an author and be able to see the reviews without having to use the inspector. If there's no other way then I would use it. Static/Smart group may be a better choice, and and I am wondering how to best make it work. I am also looking for a faster way to use Show With Chapters, or a more "visible way", which I explain below.

It would be nice to be able to see links on the Main editor without having to invoke them by extra clicks on the inspector. This would afford a measure of serendipity/awareness as we are scrolling down references, an easier access to references that are connected. The fields abstract and especially keywords take too much space and I wish there could be a split window where links could be placed. The argument for this integration? Reviews/links are just as important an the main reference, which is the trunk. The branches are the links. Of course, Show With Chapters could also feature in that pane as well. This is not a suggestion to do away with the Inspector, but to reproduce the linking in the main editor in a small pane.

I also notice, if I may, that Inspector links pane does not refresh as we are scrolling references. This requires extra clicks and loss of time in the long run. May this could be improved/corrected. Sorry to suggest these here, but suggestions such as these overlap directly with my overflow. Best

It doesn't refresh because that would defeat its purpose. You add links by drag and drop. If the window refreshed when you clicked on the reference to drag that of course would not work.

That's why there's a menu for this -- Refs -> Make Parent in Link Inspector. Or do what I do, and press Option-Command-L

You can also add a column in the reference list for links. It won't show you what the links are, but it will show you how many links a reference has.

Of course it would defeat the purpose, what was I thinking? I will start using more often the Make Parent link, as well as good idea of links column. Thanks for explaining this stuff to me.

I have another idea, too, for adding clickable links to the Concise view. I'll think about it.
