Chicago A: How to cite page numbers without extraneous period?

Post by obrieke »

I'm using the default Chicago 16th A format, which works well except for one problem.

When I cite a page number in footnotes, Bookends always inserts a period before the comma and page number. So, a citation reads:
"Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five., 3" Rather than "Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five, 3."

Of course, I need the final period when there is not page number ("Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five.", so I don't want to just get rid of it. But I don't want it there when a page is cited.

I've worked with the manual and looked into conditional formatting, but since I can't find a field code for cited page, I don't know how to tell Bookends to make this final period conditional on whether a page is cited or not.

Am I missing something easy? Is there a fix for this?

Many thanks!

You didn't show us the temp citation.

I assume you mean the format? I'm just using the default.
For a book:
a. t. $Translated by $u3*. l: u, d.

Settings for cited pages are "," before and "." after.

No, the actual temp citation you have entered in a word processing document (and which word processor you are using).

Sorry, and many thanks for your help.

Citation would be:
{Vonnegut, 1969, #93638@3}

I can't reproduce this with Word (you didn't say what you are using). Are you using the latest release of Bookends? If so, please contact tech support and send your database and a one page document with a single citation on it that demonstrates this problem.

For anyone following this thread, the problem arose only in an old version of Bookends (12.2). I don't recall exactly in which release it was addressed, but the current version (12.6.4) doesn't have this issue.
