Ulysses/Bookends/Word Workflow Not Working

Post by pmcleod »

Having read the FAQs and Help Guides for Ulysses and Bookends I am still at a loss and need help badly. I am falling behind in my project and I hope this group can give me some assistance.

My steps:
  • Select Word as Bookends Word Processor
    Import a citation into Bookends
    Highlight the citation and select "copy citation"
    Paste citation into Ulysses | Example: "{Wirth, 1971, #48341}"
    Open Ulysses page in MS Word, citation appears highlighted as "Wirth, 1971, #48341" where "1" is superscript as a footnote, created by word.
    In Word select the Add-ins Tab and select Scan Document
    Scan Document Dialog appears
    Choose default settings
    Select Ok
Result:
  • Nothinng, no reference is built, the citation is not converted.

What am I doing wrong? Please help me as soon as you can. I am at my wits end. Kind regards and thank you in advance

Just enter some text in your Ulysses document in curly brackets:

{this is a test}

and open the Ulysses page in Word. Is it text as entered, or superscripted and footnoted?

There you are -- this is a Ulysses markup thing, it has nothing to do with Bookends. You can probably change that behavior in Ulysses preferences, but that's just a guess. If you can't figure it out, contact their tech support. Or, in Bookends preferences, you can change the citation delimiters to something else (like [ ] ).

BTW, a simple google search reveals that Ulysses indeed uses curly brackets to generate inline footnotes on export as RTF.

However, it should be two curly brackets in a row, not one.

{{- my footnote}}

not one. So either there's a setting that you have changed or there is a problem with Ulysses, in which case you should contact them for help.

The issue is clearly not with Bookends. It's is with Ulysses. As I have said, you should contact them for tech support.

Yeah, sounds like you just need to change the markup.
This might help:
