Request for better support of create/show as chapter

Post by Nhaps »

Edited book, inproceeding, and book allow to replicate a new reference as chapter, with bi-directional links. But we have several other references that need to be the child of a ref parent other than these three. PLEASE make the Vol field available to hold parent title across the board no matter what the reference type.

It holds the volume and issue number for journal articles.

With the exception of journal articles, forgot to mention. To clarify, what I need is for book custom references I created to generate chapters as well. As of now they are greyed out, hence the reason for the request.

Bookends doesn't know what your custom references are and so can't know if they would benefit from such an option (e.g. Artwork, Dissertation, etc. would not). It would be confusing to offer it to any reference. If you want the option, call your custom reference a Book, Dup as Book Chapter, then change the Types to whatever you really want.

I assume you know how to make the links yourself. If not, ask and I'll explain.

Select the reference you want to link, then click on the Inspector icon (upper right corner of the library window) and choose the link inspector. The reference you selected will be shown at the top (the "parent"). Then drag and drop any "children" you want linked to the list below. They'll be added with the default link set in Preferences. You can change the relationship with the popup arrows.

To start with another reference, drag and drop it onto the top of the link inspector and it becomes the new parent.

BTW, you can also see if a reference has links, and how many, by adding "Links" to the columns displayed in the reference list.

Sorry I meant "explain" your first idea, not second. But that's clear, rename field from Book to whatever I want. I want to second my request by rewording it: I need BE to apply the book chapter capability to any parent reference that begins with the word "Book". Then I could expand with a second word description thereby cloning the properties of Book type.

This would do away with the need to rename back the reference to whatever other name. There several different reference books that are collections, and differ from the classic book format in BE. This is important because if need be, I can always come back to this custom parent ref and add a chapter to it when needed, without the hassle to rename back and forth.

Allowing this for any Type beginning with "Book" is do-able. But realize that the resulting reference would always be of type "Book Chapter".

That's all we need, no child reference other than book chapter. Parent begins with "Book". Now is this already in place or should we wait for an update?

We don't update Bookends telepathically. But now that I think about it, Book Chapter would fall in the category of Types that could be replicated as Book Chapter. So that's not a solution. I'll have to think about it.

In the next update, if you use a custom type that contains the characters

[Book] or [book]

Bookends will enable the Refs -> Replicate As Book Chapter menu item and treat the reference as a book.
