I've been working on developing a couple custom formats, including an NIH Grant (PHS 398) compliant format. Everything is set the way I want. I just wanted to find out if there was someway for Bookends to sort citations in-text alphabetically prior to numbering and creating the bibliography. I often have multiple citations that are input in non-alphabetical order. For example:
{Smith et al., 2006, #79872; Jones et al., 2003, #4634; Adams et al., 2007, #89384; Devine, 1989, #16424}
When I run my bibliography scan in Nisus, those are numbered [1-4] in text, and the bibliography has the references in the order entered. Is there a setting I can select that will sort those alphabetically prior to creating the bibliography so the order is Adams; Devine; Jones; Smith as 1-4, respectively?
By the way, using Bookends 12.7 (RC2) with Nisus.
Also, how can I upload or make the NIH Grant format generally available?
Thanks,
Frank
Sorting in-text citation prior to bibliography creation
Re: Sorting in-text citation prior to bibliography creation
Just found the alphabetizing option instructions in the manual (p. 194). However, that alphabetizes all the authors in all citations. Is there anyway to do that within each citation group?

Yes, it's in the Citation Options section of the format.

Re: Sorting in-text citation prior to bibliography creation
I see that as an option, but I can't get it to work. It is grayed out when I have "Numbered" set, not surprising because that doesn't allow much editing. If I turn Custom on, it is available, but then none of my in-text citations are numbered. I just get empty brackets. So it seems that the Custom feature doesn't work well with Numbered citations. There is nothing about this in the manual that I can see. Does this feature work with numbered citations?
Also, I'm having a world of trouble making these edits as FC2 is crashing after almost every change. It's crashed at least 20 times today. Sometimes it is a fatal crash, and sometimes multiple errors (-47) precede the crash. I've rebuilt my library as it suggested, but I'm still getting database errors (-47). There may have also been a -25 error as well. I've had to go back several times and retrieve old versions of my format to use as the one I'm working on gets corrupted by the crash.

Re: Sorting in-text citation prior to bibliography creation
Sorry, I misunderstood your first post. If you want numbered citations and an alphabetized bibliography you have to check both Number references and Alphabetize references in the format (Bibliography tab). In the Citation Options tab select Number.
As for the crashes, sounds like a virus checker is operating.

Re: Sorting in-text citation prior to bibliography creation
Jon,
You understood correctly the first time. I want the citations within an in-text group to be alphabetized before they are numbered, not all of the references alphabetized. The format I'm creating requires citation numbers in order of appearance. However, when I put citations in the document, they are often not in alphabetical order. I can go through and reorder them, but it seems Bookends can do this sorting for Name-Date citations, but not for numbered. That is, the selection under "Common Settings" for Author-Date is active for "Order Grouped Citations" but it is disabled for Numbered formats. Is there a reason that can't be available as an option for Numbered citations?
Thanks for the heads-up on the virus protection. I'm running Sophos and I'll see if that is the source of the problem.

Re: Sorting in-text citation prior to bibliography creation
Bookends can't do that. It assigns the numbers in the order they're encountered in the group.
