How to scan from OpenOffice?

I have a document in Word/RTF that needs to be scanned. Unfortunately, Word crashes on my every time (i.e, does not respond any more) in the middle of the scan.

I need to switch - fast. Deadline and all that. I've got OpenOffice - but I can't find out how to scan the document. A hint, please ...

btw, I've got Pages 5.6.1. too. Latest version, according to Apple. There ought to be something like Biblio > Scan open Apple Pages documents. I can't find that either ...

I (blush) found out the Biblio > Scan open Apple Pages document is inside Bookends, not inside Pages. Stupid of me

But now Bookends stops responding. I do feel screwed ...

I am just a user of Bookends, but I have a few questions regarding your problem:
What kind of file is it, you are trying to scan? Have you previously worked with Bookends on this file?
How do the references look like within the text? Are they already formatted?

On my Mac I switched to Mellel+Bookends. My old files (Word+Endnote) I have to unformat before I can use them in Mellel+Bookends. Maybe this is the source of your problem?

It's in rtf, output from Scrivener. The quotes are in this format:

{Kant, 1913, #84137}

Since this is work in progress, I usually have fresh outputs every time my supervisor wants to see what I have written since last time. So I don't think the unformating would be necessary in my case. (But switching to Mellel might, since Word is letting me down).

I don't think that Mellel will solve your problem, since you tried Word and Pages without success.
I think the problem is that you started your document in Scrivener, added references and switched to another writing software (Word).
Jon might be able to help. I am sure he will soon post a solution.

Is it possible that you did not select the correct word processor in the settings of Bookends? See attached image

I don't know what you mean by Word stops responding in the middle of the scan -- Word is not involved at all once the scan starts. Does your file have graphics? If so, could this be the issue?

I really appreciate your help. This time I'm quite sure - I use Scrivener, and Scrivener is selected. I write in Scrivener, export to RTF and open the RTF-file in a word processor, usually Word 'cause my supervisor is used to it. And then I scan the document so the preliminary references are replaced.

I just got help using Mellel - and it works! Edit -> Bibliography -> convert text to citations, that did the trick. The same Bookends Library that didn't work with Word, screwed up with OpenOffice and did funny things in TextEdit - (^ibid) instead of (Höhne 2003) - works smoothly with Mellel. Life just got better.

BTW, in response to your initial question, you scan .odt files using Biblio -> Scan Document.

Thanks for your feedback. I started using Mellel, because I love Bookends and realized that it works best in combination with Mellel.
Yet, when I read your description of the problem (didn't work in Word nor OpenOffice) I wasn't convinced that Mellel will do the job.

Just one last thing.
Simple things, like adding page numbers, are difficult in Mellel...but you get used to it
Mellel does not show you double space between words (green line in Word)...but there is a fix, you have to activate "space" in "display options" (just my translation from German)...and this will show you grey dots for spaces in the text.
