Cannot remove pdf attachment highlighting

I can highlight text in PDF attachments but I can't remove or change it. I can't even select the highlighted text other than by extending the selection before and after the highlight. Am I doing something wrong?

Are you using Sierra? There are bugs in PDF Kit that prevent Bookends from showing highlighted annotations (like highlights) in the PDF. But if you click on one it is still selected, and pressing Delete will remove it.
