problem logging into iCloud

Post by midas »

Hi,

I have Bookends 12.8.1 (latest version). I am attempting to set up iCloud-based sync and am having trouble logging into my iCloud account via Bookends. I changed Folder Locations for Attachment Folder to iCloud Folder for iOS Sync.

I then tried to 'Sign in to Cloud' using the button located at the bottom right of the left-side Groups list. I log in using my app-specific iCloud password, and it does not work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Log in with your Apple ID, not an app-specific password.

Hmmm... this is somewhat confusing (and, not your fault, really).

For improved security, Apple is requiring app-specific passwords for iCloud --- this makes sense from a security standpoint. All apps are required to work this way, starting June 15, according to Apple. I'm already doing this for another app (Fantastical).

Have I misunderstood?

I dug around a bit more, and found clarification on Apple's site. Apparently, app-specific pwd is required only for apps that access iCloud via a method that does not support two-factor authentication. Since Bookends is using iCloud Drive, this is a non-issue, and I can use my regular Apple login/pwd. I don't know if any of that made sense to a non-computer programming person. But, that's what it says on Apple's web site, and I have to take their word.

I logged in using my normal Apple ID/pwd, and it seems to be working fine.

Hopefully, this is useful to others.

Thanks.

It doesn't make complete sense to me. What's to stop an app collecting Apple ID login information ?
