DOI formatting

Post by erin3900 »

When exporting citations from Bookends, how can I set it up so that the DOI information appears in the updated "https" format? The APA is recommending a new DOI format that looks something like this:

https://doi.org/10.xxxx/xxxxxxx

(Here's a link with more information: http://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/2017/ ... -2017.html)

For example, when I currently export a citation, the DOI information is always preceded by "doi:" (which is the format shown in the APA 6th edition manual); but the APA is now suggesting that DOI information appear in the references list in this new format).

Here is an example reference, the way that it appears right now when I export the citation:

Menche, J., Sharma, A., Cho, M. H., Mayer, R. J., Rennard, S. I., Celli, B., . . . Barabási, A.-L. (2014). A diVIsive Shuffling Approach (VIStA) for gene expression analysis to identify subtypes in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. BMC Systems Biology, 8(Supp. 2), 1-13. doi:10.1186/1752-0509-8-s2-s8

Here is the same citation (which I've edited), using the suggested updated guidelines:

Menche, J., Sharma, A., Cho, M. H., Mayer, R. J., Rennard, S. I., Celli, B., . . . Barabási, A.-L. (2014). A diVIsive Shuffling Approach (VIStA) for gene expression analysis to identify subtypes in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. BMC Systems Biology, 8(Supp. 2), 1-13. https://doi.org/10.1186/1752-0509-8-s2-s8

Is there a way that I can opt to use the updated DOI format?

Actually, I see now that I can alter this formatting using the "Formats Manager" tab. Here is the Field Order that is showing currently for journal articles (APA 6th edition):

a. (d). t. [u14]. [u10]. f, v(i~)~|~, ~p-`.` {$doi:$u17^$Retrieved from $z}

Should I just change it to this instead: a. (d). t. [u14]. [u10]. f, v(i~)~|~, ~p-`.` {$https://doi.org/$u17^$Retrieved from $z}

That seems to fix the issue -- but please let me know if I'm missing something. Thanks again!

If it's giving you the output you want then use it. As you found out, DOIs are stored in User17, so you have correctly added u17 to the order field.
