Creating a new reference type from an existing one

Post by joseph_anton »

I would like to be able to take the existing "Dissertation" reference type and modify it to produce a new "Dissertation chapter" reference type (following the example of "Book" / "Book Chapter"). Is there any easy way to base a new reference type on an existing one without manually copying the fields across?

Are you talking about doing this in the Format Manager? Or where?

I had been looking at Reference Types under Refs in the Preference pane actually.

In that case you rename an Unused Type and edit the field names (in the same tab in Preferences). Typically you would want to change just a few of the field names (there is no copying involved, just enter them from the keyboard). There's nothing else you need to do.
