I'm hoping to create a series of sort-of Literature Review matrices in Bookends. In short, a literature review matrix (usually via a spreadsheet) organises sources by themes (and sub themes) and authors in order to more easily compose a review: https://www.slideshare.net/mystudiouslife/lr-matrix-ple. Key point is that not all authors speak to all themes, of course. The benefit is the user can quickly focus on a single theme, outline accordingly based on the matrix row, and write.
The process then is to read --> put relevant bits of articles into the various themes of the matrix --> use the matrix to compose a first draft.
My hope is to accomplish something similar entirely in Bookends, perhaps by using a workflow of Tags, Folders, and Groups (which, I'm sad to say, I haven't much practiced with in BE).
I'm quite open to a workflow in this regard, but I don't want to go down the rabbit hole of reinventing the wheel if various processes are already in place.
What is your workflow in this regard? Thanks in advance!
How would you accomplish this process in Bookends?
Re: How would you accomplish this process in Bookends?
Conceptually, at least, this sounds a lot like a subject bibliography. For example, you can use a certain keyword for each theme and enter it in the Keywords field for the corresponding references. Then generate a subject bibliography (Biblio -> Subject Bibliography), select the keywords (themes) you want output, and click OK. Bookends will generate a list of themes, and under each will be the formatted references that apply.

Thanks, Jon .
Using this method, though, how would one get excerpts, notes, etc by source, as that's what's needed to write from the review matrix.

You can configure the format to output the source and notes for each reference, or whatever other metadata you like.
