Issues with Bookends 13.1.2

Post by kourosh »

Hi all,

After I upgraded Bookends to the most recent version i.e., 13.1.2. I noticed that the online search tool and Bookends Browser become very slow, to the extend that make it impossible to use these handy features. Also, I notice that the Quick Add is not as powerful as before. Using quick add with a doi number almost always gave me a desired result. But with this version, just today, I have tried 2, 3 doi nubmers and all of them failed.
Also number of crashes has increased tremendously since the update.
Any one else is experiencing the same issues with this version?

I am running Bookends on macOS High Sierra 10.13.6.

Thanks

None of those sound like something that would happen due to an update. Have you tried Rebuilding your library? If you do that and still have issues, please contact tech support directly, and include DOIs that you think Bookends should find and didn't.

Hi Jon,

Thank you for your response. I did rebuilt the library but the issues are still there. I will contact the tech support.

After upgrading to 13.1.2, the app freezes up when I try to enter a new AUTHOR. Complete freeze—can't do anything but force quit. I've written Support twice over the past week or so but hear nothing back. I've re-installed the upgrade twice but each time with the same problem. Verification of the database checks out. I use Bookends on High Sierra 10.13.6.
Can anyone recommend a solution?

I haven't received any emails with this complaint -- make sure you write directly, the forum's email forwarding is flaky.

Try a fresh new database. If that fails let me know via email.

Bookends on my system is back to normal. Unfortunately, I don't know what was the issue and what resolved it.
My guess is that, for some reason Bookends has difficulty connecting to the internet and I think this was the source of the other issues as well. I tried Bookends on a guest user on same the system and it was perfectly fine.

Is there anyway to remove cache on Bookends or restore everything to the default for these situations?

There's really nothing to restore to default. But if there are Internet problems then things like DOI lookup will take more time or fail.

Hi Jon,

Thank you for your response.

I did not try to open my main library on the guest account. I simply open Bookends in the guest account and try online search which worked just fine.
The issue that I had was not what you described. Like I said, it had to do with Bookends trying to connect to the internet and was not able to do so. Also my database/attachments are not on a server.

I think I figure it out, it seems that the Kaspersky antivirus software is not compatible with the current version of Bookends (is that even possible?). Quitting Kaspersky was the thing that resolve the issue.

Thanks

Yes, that's the problem. Antivirus software can definitely interfere with Bookends (and since they are updated often, new problems can pop up without warning). We mention some problems in our FAQ that discusses a problem that occurred with older versions of Bookends. But as you have seen they can cause other problems.

I'm not familiar with Kaspersky, but if you're forced to run it you can probably whitelist Bookends.

I already contacted them to see what solution they offer. Meanwhile I have to quit my antivirus.

Things work fine with a new library using 13.1.2, but the same freeze-up with my old, regular library. Next step is a rebuild of the old library?
