Consolidation

Post by dtoub »

Probably just being overly cautious, but I had migrated from EndNote using XML and all my previous attachments (PDFs) remain in the convoluted EndNote-associated folder, while new Bookends-generated attachments appropriately go into an Attachments folder on my drive. I'd love to just have my old references (still the majority of my attachments) be consolidated into the Bookends default Attachments folder. If I do that global change with the Consolidate command, will that break the links to the Booklinks attachments (as they would that currently reside in the EndNote folder, or will the references in Bookends now all be linked to the consolidated attachments in Attachments and all is good if I delete the endnote attachments folder?

That is:

Current state: most attachments in Bookends reside in EndNote's folder
Desired state: all attachments are in Bookends' Attachments folder
Consolidate
Delete Endnote folder
Will references in Bookends retain their attached references even if now in Attachments, not Endnotes?

Thanks.Don't want to break the links to over 1k attachments.

Actually, there are no PDF "links" in Bookends. Bookends just knows the PDF names, it doesn't store the paths. When a PDF is called on for display, Bookends searches the known attachment folders (starting with the default) for the PDF of that name, then renders it. This is why Bookends ensures that PDF names are unique. So yes, you can consolidate them in the default folder and Bookends will still find them. You then may want to click "Remove Paths to Arbitrary Folders" in preferences so that Bookends "forgets" the location where EndNote stored them and no longer looks there.
