Google Scholar working for others?

Post by alanterra »

Are others having problems with Google Scholar? When I type in a title, I get 10,800,000 matches and a Captcha that I can't complete w/in the Bookends window. I suspect that something has changed at Google Scholar.

Any thoughts about what might be wrong on my side? (I've had this bug for 48 hours or so).

So, this is what I think is happening.

Google Scholar has flagged my IP for possible abuse. Why, I'm not sure. It wants to show me a Captcha to prove I'm human, after which it will whitelist that browser through a cookie.
  • I can't get GS to show the Captcha in Firefox, so I can't get that browser whitelisted.
  • The Captcha doesn't show correctly in the browser window in Bookends, so I can't get that browser whitelisted either.
  • If I use Safari, the Captcha is shown, and after I pass the test, then I can get references through Safari.
Google has almost no information about this issue on its help pages, but some ?volunteers? who understand Google better than most suggest something like what I wrote above. So, until Google lifts the flag, I have to pull in references from Google Scholar through Safari.

In my experience. once you can search again GS will lift the ban on downloading within 24 hours.
