Unable to Quick Add a new reference by DOI

Post by rustrans »

Hi,
I'm trying to insert an article from the JSTOR here https://www.jstor.org/stable/2975974 that has its own DOI https://doi.org/10.2307/2975974
So I would go to

Code: Select all

Ref -> New Reference -> Quick Add
and paste

Code: Select all

https://doi.org/10.2307/2975974
into the field but nothing happens.
So I'm somewhat confused what format of DOI should I use to automatically enter a new reference.

Somehow I was not able to find anything in the tutorial in this regard.

Also the same article here:
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10. ... .tb01525.x
with the DOI https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1540-6261.1952.tb01525.x
did not produce any new entries after pasting that DOI into the Quick Add field

JSTOR DOIs are used internally by JSTOR, they are not Crossref DOIs (which is where from Bookends fetches DOI information).

For JSTOR, you must use the URL the contains the JSTOR "DOI".

I entered this in the Quick Add field:

https://www.jstor.org/stable/2975974

and the reference was imported.

Hi Jon!

Thank you for your prompt reply!

I must be doing something wrong, but when I go to
`Refs -> New References -> Quick Add` and enter `https://www.jstor.org/stable/2975974`
it adds a blank reference with only DOI field automatically filled in:

I don't know, it works for me. If you go to that URL in your browser, do you see the article by Harry Markowitz? If not, you may lack privileges for it (although I wouldn't know why, since I don't have any special privileges).

Yes, I can the see the proper article in the browser.
By the way, I'm doing this on Bookends 13.4.2

Well, I just tried inserting another article into Bookends:
https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/2512962
and pasting the full URL, then

Code: Select all

doi/10.1145/2512962
and then

Code: Select all

10.1145/2512962
into the Quick Add and again it did not work.
Maybe there is some kind of a log that I could check and see what's happening?

Only the first and last of those should work, and they work for me (importing a reference by Bin Li).

But when I tried to fetch in from Crossref.org in my browser, nothing happened for about one minute and then I got an Internal Server Error.

So it seems Crossref's servers are having problems. I'd try again when they're back to normal. Note that they have periodic slowdowns, which they're aware of, and Bookends will time out if the response takes too long. That's what is no doubt happening in your case.
