Importing supplemental files from Papers?

Post by edmundbeurk »

I’m looking for a solution to replace my increasingly buggy Papers 3 reference library, and Bookends seems to be a workable solution – almost. One thing that’s still (apparently) missing is a way to transfer supplemental data files from Papers to Bookends. Is there an established procedure for doing this? Or potentially scriptable? It’s the one thing that’s keeping me from pulling the trigger and switching over. Very grateful for any advice.

They are just attachments, right? If so, they would be exported like any attachment. Or does Papers treat them differently.

Here are the instructions for moving from Papers to Bookends:

Many thanks for the quick reply! While they are indeed attachments, the supplemental files are unfortunately handled a little differently and are not exported when running File -> Export PDF Files and Media on Papers. I have hundreds of supplemental files to move, so doing it manually would be extremely tedious.

Supplemental files seem, however, to be included when exporting as a Papers Archive (.pprs), but perhaps that doesn't help in this case...

Look at the EndNote XML generated by Papers when you export a reference with supplemental files? Are the names included, and if so, where? If they are in that file in the usual place for attachments, their names can be imported into Bookends. Then you just have to move the PDFs manually in the Finder to the Bookends default attachment folder.

You should contact support at support@sonnysoftware.com to continue this. And please send that EndNote XML file (containing only one reference, not thousands) and tell me the name of the supplemental data so I can see if it's there.
