Online Search via Google Scholar requires Captcha almost everytime
Online Search via Google Scholar requires Captcha almost everytime
Online search for articles via Google Scholar has worked really well for years. In the past few months I have noticed the frequency of requiring to fill in a CAPTCHA has increased, almost to the point that every search now requires one. After the CAPTCHA is successfully passed, searching for an article frequently just results in a webview of a Google Scholar page of a search for "d". I have to do an advanced search or something else to make it "snap into" real results and not just showing a webview of Google Scholar with a search for "d". This is getting quite frustrating. Any idea what is going on?

I don't know why Google thinks you're a robot, but there are things that you can do that might make this less likely. One is to sign into Google Scholar (in Bookends Browser or Safari, click on the hamburger icon and then My profile. Another is to limit the number of references you download at a time. No one knows what triggers Google's suspicions, so these are based on empirical observations only.

P.S. I think you are referring to the direct search. You can also use Bookends Browser to search Google Scholor (set the bookmark to take you there when the browser window opens). If you've configured the Google Scholar settings properly, you'll see the option Import into Bookends after each reference. Clicking that will add the reference you your library and never cause Google to think you're a robot.
This is how to configure Google Scholar for getting high quality data and an import link:

I was logged into google scholar in safari but not in the Bookends browser. Just did that and crossing my fingers!
Yes I was referring to direct search. I don't do all my literature discovery via Google Scholar so I am often using direct search.
