color coding and smart groups

Post by Gerben »

First of all, congrats on the update! I am one of those who once asked for color coding and was pleasantly suprised to see its implementation and the addition of the other new features as well. BE keeps getting better and better..

There seems to be one issue with color coding however: i just color coded all refs in a smart group. When i clicked on another group and than clicked this smart group again i did not see any refs in it anymore.. The refs did appear color coded in the main list so i color coded them 'back' as normal. Than they turned up again when i clicked the smart group. (i hope this sentence makes any sense...)

Is this a potential bug or do i miss something about behavior of smart groups?

Best,
Gerben

Hi Gerben, I just did what I think you did and it worked as expected (the smart group references were retained and colored when I left the group and returned). Maybe you can tell us, step by step, what you did?

P.S. Try this with a fresh database, too, please.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I just checked it with a new database and no problems... with my existing database there still is a problem but i found a solution. This is what i did and what solved it:

- i color coded a smart group
- i than clicked another group
- clicked on the smart group i just coloured, no refs anymore

solution:
- double click on the smart group so that the settings pane appears
- do nothing, only click ok
- voila: now the refs appear

Strange that with a new database there is no problem. Having said that, I have not yet tried a database repair/rebuild and tested if that solves the issue completely. Seems likely i should do that, no?

Yup, rebuild or repair please.

BTW, note that you can build smart groups that use the color label as a criterion. This may be very useful if you like highly organized data.

Yes, rebuild the smart groups and the color coding works a treat. Thanks for implementing this, an eagerly anticipated feature for me.

Thanks royboy, it turned out to be more useful than I thought it would (i.e. I think I'll use it!).
