problem entering new refs

I'm suddenly having a problem I've not encountered before. When I try to enter a new reference, I can type into the first field, but as soon as I try to move to the next field, I get the following error message:

Database Engine Error: Segment "3857" is wrong. The last segment is "3856."

I get a similar error message while trying to copy records from online DBs.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Rebuild the database -- that should take care of it. The next Bookend release should, among other things, make this rare problem even rarer.
