Fearing data loss, I have been trying a few online data backup services, particularly Xdrive and Amazon's s3 (using JungleDisk and Interarchy).
I am having a problem with Bookends files. If I upload them to the servers, and then redownload them, I can't open the bookends file. If I zip it up first, then decompress after downloading it, it's ok.
The second option is not really an option, because if I want to set up the backups to be down automatically to my Documents folder, I want it to be automatic, not manual: i.e., I can't go in manually and zip up individual files each time.
I wonder if this has something to do with the fact that Bookends databases don't have a file ending (that I can see)? I tried the above procedure with other files of mine such as Omnioutliner files, and they worked fine.
Any advice?
problem with BE files to online backup services
Bookends has a file creator and file type. It sounds like your backup software doesn't respect the Mac metadata. I suggest either configuring them so they do (I don't use them so can't tell you how) or use other backup software that does.

P.S. Of course it's easy to add the metadata back with File Type (free on VersionTracker). Creator is BERB, Type is BEDN.
