Difference page sequences in footnotes

Post by Svatopluk »

Dear Bookends Wisdom,

I'm coming to the Bookends + Mellel combination from years of Word + Endnote. In ye olden days with Word+EndNote I could choose 'Edit Footnote' from within Word and from there I could specify a page or page range for that particular reference. EndNote would include that data when using subsequent shortened titles or Latin abbreviations. Reading the Bookends guide it seems clear on how to specify page ranges in Bookends, but I am unclear on how to this from within Mellel. I'm suing the 'drag-and-drop' option from the instructions.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

In Mellel, double-click on the citation to "open" it, then enter the page (typically by using cited pages):

Smith, 2007, #23432@15-20

Thanks Jon, it's still not exactly what I have in front of me. As I mentioned, I don't type in the codes, but drag-and-drop the references into Mellel from Bookends. When I double-click, a window appears ('Edit Citation') with two frames: the top one is 'Citation' (in this case "Author, Date, Title" [no itals]; the lower frame is 'Formatted Citation' where my citation appears fully formatted. I've tried using the '@' code as you suggest, but it didn't work quite right. The pages number apppeared after a full stop and without spaces.

Many thanks.

You have to add it to the upper citation (the temporary one) and then rescan. That doesn't work?

Sadly, it produces this [end of footnote, Labaun is the publisher]: "Labaun, 1701.322" rather than the expected "Labaun, 1701, 322".

Is this a shortcoming of the drag-and-drop method?

No, nothing to do with drag and drop. Try unscanning, then scanning again...

Hi,

It works here. Here is what I did:

1. Drag and drop a reference to Mellel.
2. Scan.
3. In Mellel, double click on the citation and add "@15" after the temporary citation.
4. Scan again.

The result is the citation, followed by p. 15 (I uses the APA 5th edition format).

Try these steps and see if it works for you, too.

Thanks, but I'm getting the same result. Maybe something's gone wrong with my format in Chicago 14th (which is what I'm using)?

It might have something to do with the 'Cited 'Pages' section in 'Bib & Doc Options' section. Mine says 'display page range', but, despite reviewing the guide, I cannot figure out what should go in the 'before' adnd 'after fields.'

Try APA 5th, please.

As for before and after, whatever you want. E.g. Before: 'p. ' and After: '.' (without the apostrophes).

Thanks Jon, I'm really making progress now. I added the ', ' and '.' to the before and after fields and it nearly correct now. However, it still ends the citation with a full stop. How can I instruct it to omit the full stop when pages follow?

This is great help, thanks so much.
