Using modified APA 5th edition and APA citations formats I am getting et al. in secondary order for references with more than one author, rather than more than two.
That is, the first time I cite a paper with three or more authors I get something like:
Girotto, Kemmelmeier, Sperber, & van der Henst, 2001
This is correct.
The second time I cite it I get:
Girotto et al., 2001
This is also correct.
The first time I cite a paper with two authors I get something like:
Wilson & Sperber, 2002
This is also correct.
BUT: the next time I cite it, I get:
Wilson et al., 2002
This is wrong.
Can anyone suggest what mistake I might be making?
et al in secondary citation for two authors - why?
Hi,
I'll reply here because the issue was raised on the forum (but it really should have been sent to tech support).
Your APA Citations format is set incorrectly in two places:
1. The Secondary Order authors should be output as "Names Same As Primary" or, perhaps, "Use et al". You have it set to "Surname Only et al.", which what Bookends is giving you (first author's surname followed by et al.).
2. In Bib & Citations Options tell Bookends to insert "et al" after the first author (you have it set to -1, which causes all author names to be omitted).
When I corrected these settings the scan gave the result you wanted.

Many thanks.
I posted the question here because I was pretty sure there was nothing wrong with Bookends, just with me. Sure enough...
Still, if something similar comes up in future, I'll email you instead.
I have things working now, thanks to your advice. Just one point of clarification:
Thanks again Jon. I - and others - have said this before, but your support for Bookends is really outstanding.

I'm afraid I couldn't find -1 anywhere in Bib & Citations Options. I changed the number in the box 'Insert after name' from 1 to 2. That seemed to work. Is this the place that you meant?2.
