Volume, Issue, Article Number

Post by rickl »

The Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication is an online-only journal, and, instead of page numbers, it uses article numbers.
Ellison, N. B., Steinfield, C., & Lampe, C. (2007). The benefits of Facebook "friends:" Social capital and college students' use of online social network sites. Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, 12(4), article 1. http://jcmc.indiana.edu/vol12/issue4/ellison.html
As general good practice, what would be the best field to use for the article number? I ask because in the past I've run into unforeseen and unwanted consequences when making my own uninformed decisions about things like this.

It's really up to you. If you create your own Type for these articles (not a bad idea) then you could probably use the Pages field. Alternatively, you could assign a user field that you don't use for anything and enter the info there. You'll have to tweak the formats you use to insert this field where you want it, of course.

OK, it sounds like creating a new Type is the way to go, as there may be other unforeseen uses of user fields in the future. Thanks for the advice.
