More flexible live search

Post by hareiko »

Is it possible to make the search field in the list view more flexible by:
1. Adding the possibility of on "and" / "or" search strings
2. Adding an exclusion option ( "smith" but not "miller")
3. Allow search for multiple adjacent word strings

The live search is always an AND search (the space or punctuation serves as the AND). It's always possible to make the live search more complex, but the Find is for that, and provides a clearer interface.

Jon, I agee: its all there in the find dialog. But that's another window and therefore far far away (why I actually almost never use it). Don't you think some of that flexibility could be available in the list view? Maybe I am asking too much!

Hi,

Well, it's a Command-F away. As I said, it's easy to make the live search more complicated. But it's not really intended for complex searches (Find and SQL Search, and the corresponding smart searches, are for that). Everyone is quite familiar with the live search paradigm -- I'm not sure piling in options like "Smith | Jones" to do an or serach is an improvement.
