Suggestions for Change Case to Title Case

Post by aechallu »

It is very common in my field to cite using Title Case, and for XYZ reasons asking BE to automatically format citations using title case doesn't work for me. So I need to store titles as they are going to be cited. That is why I rely intensively on Refs/Global Change/Change Case, Title Case.

Change Case, however, can do a better job in handling a usage scenario that is quite common in my case. I regularly add references from MARC databases (LOC, Ohiolink) that store titles in this format:

"Title : the subtitle ABC" (Title[space]:[space]the subtitle ABC),

where ABC is an acronym. In the current implementation, getting Title Case through global change renders

"Title : the Subtitle Abc."

I ultimately want to get

"Title: The Subtitle ABC".

In summary I want BE to do:

a. Transform "[space]:[space]" into ":[space]"
b. After a semicolon the first letter should be capitalized
c. If the title contains upper and lower case words, upper case words should be treated as acronyms.

Rule c is handy to me as I don't have a regular list of acronyms I could list in the exemptions list, but I realize this could be problematic to implement or for some people. Rules a-b are important.

The approach I favor is changing the way of doing the change-case exceptions (under preferences/scan & bib): exempted words are either acronyms or regular words (checkbox next to each word added to the list). An Acronyms's case is preserved regardless of punctuation context. Regular words can be capitalized if (and only if) they follow a punctuation sign.

Hi,

Treating uppercase words as acronyms is a bad idea. There are sites out there that output some fields (like title) in ALL CAPS. Bookends has to work with those, too.

As for acronyms, did you try entering the acronyms into the "Don't change case" list in preferences (Scan & Bib tab)?

Finally, Bookends will change the letter after the colon to upper case, provided it follows by one space.
