Formatting Citations for Manuscripts

Post by klnixon »

This is probably a very stupid question but how do you format your citations for use in a manuscript? After I scan my document, I end up with the following:

(Magen, R. H. & Conroy, K. (1998). Columbia University School of Social Work training child welfare workers on domestic violence: Final report.).

Instead, i want (Magen & Conroy, 1998).

How do i get the date unbracketed and lose the title of the document? I can't seem to find where i choose the fields that i want cited.

Thanks!
Kendra

You didn't say which format you used. If you haven't already, please download the User Guide and read the section of formatting, which explains in some detail how it works. My guess is that you are somehow applying a format to be used for the bibliography and having it applied to the citations.

Hi Jon,

Sorry, i'm using APA 5th format. I don't see where i am using any other formatting. I've read the manual and done everything it says re: formatting, but to no avail. Clearly, i'm not doing something right.

Thanks

Okay, i figured it out. Didn't realize that you had to specify the format for every reference type (i.e., journal, book chapter, etc). I just assumed that once i selected APA style, the formatting would be automatic. And sorry for posting a "tech" question. Me bad!

Hi Kendra.

I'm not sure I understand -- the format contains the information needed to create a citation for each reference Type. So all you need to do is select APA 5th when you do the scan and all should work after that. I'm glad you fixed the problem, but I don't know exactly what you did wrong before that's working now (if you need to follow up on this you should contact me directly for tech support: support@sonnysoftware.com).
