Modified Turabian "Author-Date" Format

Post by Tony Higgins »

I am having a problem getting my journal citations formatted correctly. The school I am in (LEAD School) at my institution (the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) uses a modified “Author-Date” Turabian format. The following is a representation of the required journal format that is found in our style guide:

Bakal, Richard. 1988. Introduction to the principles and procedures of problem solving. Journal of Experiential Education 11 (3): 5-9.

When I use the standard “Author-Date” formats in BE, this is what I get:

Standard “Turabian Author-Date” Primary Order:
a. d. t. f v, $ no. $i~:~ p-.

Returns:
Bakal, Richard. 1988. Introduction to the principles and procedures of problem solving. Journal of Experiential Education 11, no. 3: 5-9.

With “Include issue # with volume” checked:
Bakal, Richard. 1988. Introduction to the principles and procedures of problem solving. Journal of Experiential Education 11(3), no. 3: 5-9.

Note the double use of “3”, one in parentheses, one preceded by “no.”

I have modified the “primary order” as follows (see below), and this does produce what I want—as long as there is an issue number in the reference. However, if there is not on issue number, then the colon that is supposed to be placed between the volume number (and issue number, if present), is no longer there.

Modified “Turabian Author-Date” Primary Order:
a. d. t. f v (i): ~:~ p-.

Returns:
With issue number: This is the result I want:
Bakal, Richard. 1988. Introduction to the principles and procedures of problem solving. Journal of Experiential Education 11 (3): 5-9.

Without Issue Number: This is not the result that I want:
Greene, Jennifer C., Valerie J. Caracelli, and Wendy F. Graham. 1989. Toward a conceptual framework for mixed-method evaluation designs. Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis 11 255-274.

Note the lack of a “:” separating the volume number from the pages:

Is there any way I can modify the BE settings to do the following: return a citation that includes the issue number in parentheses, followed by a colon, prior to page range; and that includes the colon, followed by page range if there is no issue number present in the reference.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Try

a. d. t. f v$ $(i)~: ~p-.

(the added $ around the space will ensure the space is there if you have an issue number, but is not there if you don't).

Thanks! Perfect!

I have to say, as a new BE user, I am both pleased and impressed with the quick response (especially since I'm trying to use BE for the first time, and I have a paper due tomorrow that uses a lot of journal citations!)

Thanks for the good work and support.
