Getting a doc directly into BE

Post by dberreby »

I guess this qualifies as a feature request -- I often find myself wishing I could skip a step in my trips between Bookends and other apps.

In the first case, I'm using the Print menu to acquire a pdf (or turn a doc into a pdf), and then, extra step, moving this new pdf into Bookends.

I makes me wish there were an option in the Print menu, under ``Save as PDF,'' that read something like ``Add PDF to Bookends and Attach It to New Empty Ref''. Or perhaps a Service along the same lines? That would save a lot of time.

Secondly, I often would like to link straight from my word processor to the PDF in Bookends. Instead, when I click on the BE link in my document I get the Ref window, and (extra step) I then have to click another time to get the PDF.

Maybe there's already a way to save a pdf as an attachment to a new BE ref, and/or to go straight to attachment by clicking on a ref's hypertext link. Anyone have thoughts/advice?

Thanks,

David

Hi,

The first request sounds like it would have to implemented in the app you were printing from.

For the second, what do you mean "click on the BE link in my document"? What word processor? Is this a hypertext link created by Bookends? If it is, it should highlight the reference in the List View (if open), which should automatically show the pdf if you have the lower pane open and set to display pdfs. If this isn't happening, you should contact tech support.

Hi, Jon,

Stupid me about #2. You're right, that solves it. I habitually keep the List View's lower pane set on `display formatted ref.'' To do what I want, all I need to do is change that setting before I set out to work this way. Thanks!

As for the first request, not sure what you mean. I am thinking of system-wide print tools offered by some database applications. For example, Journler and Evernote and Devonthink all have slots on the system's general dropdown Print menu. Ie, under ``Save as PDF'' etc there appear ``Save PDF to Devonthink'' and ``Save PDF to Evernote'' and Save to Journler. Selecting one of those puts the PDF immediately into the relevant application's database. There are three advantages here: 1 - The receiving application does not need to be open 2 - It eliminates steps (one click instead of `save as pdf' followed by placement in a database and 3 - It reduces the chance for mistakes (because it's built in to the Print script that THIS pdf will go into THAT database, there would be no chance of dragging the wrong icon from Skim over to the wrong screen in BE, as in ``oops, I have 3 pdfs open and I mistook one for another'' or ``oops, I accidentally attached this pdf to the ref I had open in BE when I shifted back to the web'').

Thanks again,

David

Hi,

I see what you mean -- I hadn't noticed that (Save to application X) in the print menu before. It's something I can look into.

I see it is incorporated into the latest update. Works great. It has saved me a lot of time already. So: Many thanks!
