That won't work. For example, if Mellel is your word processor, Bookends doesn't put the citation in the clipboard at all (this is one of the benefits of the integration between the apps), so there is nothing to paste.

You can make a format that mimics the Bookends citations:

{a, d, `#`@}

for example, will give you authors, date, and a unique id that Bookends recognizes as such. You can modify it as you like, of course. Use Copy Formatted with this format and it's the same as Copy Citation.

Jon,
This must only apply with linking to Mellel then? What I mean is, if I choose to link to DT instead, the citation is copied in plain text, so it passes through the clipboard, right?

The creation of a format workaround is a very limiting option because of the way Bookends is set to have only one format at a time.

For example if I were to do what you suggest, then my view formmated pane would be showing {author, date, #100000}. obviously that isn't what any of us would want to seein the view formatted pane. This would potentially confuse the re-scanning process with Mellel as well, no? In other words if the first scan in mellel was one format, during the rescan that same format has to be the one active in Bookends again, right?

(This is also the same sort of limitation facing the great little import RIS script created by users, no? i.e. the script can pass the info but is always subject to the last import filter used.)

Now my whole desire will be redundant if you are going to make it possible to customize how hypertext links are output: if I could customize it to be {author, date, title, ID}, then this would satisfy my want and increase the functionality with DT and Scrivener. Of the two options, I prefer the improvement to the hypertext link.

Thanks for listening Jon

Citations are meant for only one thing, to be inserted into a document for later scanning. If you are using more than one app to create your document, you must switch links in Preferences or, more easily on-the-fly: open the reference window and change the link.

Copy Formatted is for placing references, formatted as you like, into the clipboard. You can prevent the automatic switch by holding down the Option key. You can also create a "citation" format that you can switch to and from with the Bilbio -> Default Format.

Hypertext links at this time use the title (the unique ID if there is no title). This may or may not change in a future release.

So what your saying is no

Fair enough.

I do hope you will address the output style of the hyperlink in a future release (sooner rather than later).

Just wanted to say thanks

...and so soon on the heels of 9.2 itself. :-) This one feature -- plain text hyperlinking -- now allows for linking between my BE references and the equivalent folder of notes in my DT database. This is one of the types of integration many have been hoping for. Excellent.

To complete it, we'd just need a nice way to open a group/folder in DEVONthink from within BE. I assume this can't be done currently with DT's close database strcutre...or is this something there that I'm missing?

Thanks for all you hard work, Jon.

talazem,

You and I are on the same wavelength here. I think the possibility of tight integration will be furthered if DT also had a URL system like Bookends. There is indication that this may be a part of DT 2.0. I'm excited about this prospect.

If you are in a pinch to do this, you can, of course, go into your DT database file and find the file within database file. you can then retrieve that files URL using a nice little quicksilver script. The limitation with this is that the file will be opened outside of DT in the default app for the file type.

DT URL's will bring very good things. You should voice your desire on the DT forum.
