Hi Jon,

Well, because it turns out that there are several web sites of scholarly (and bibliographic) interest that are not included in config.txt.
At my institution, even such an essential tool as citeulike.org was not included and I had to submit a special request (still pending)!!!
A toggle switch on the window itself would allow me to easily switch off the ezproxy for those sites that are not included in config.txt, making those sites accessible via the BE browser and making any bibliographic data they may contain directly importable into BE (assuming the proper filters are in place).

I see. I'm not sure how generally useful this would be, but let me think about it. I imagine if there were a toggle in the search window, it would just affect the session, and when relaunching Bookends the setting in preferences (on or off) would be used again.

Thanks for giving this a thought, Jon! For instance, it could be a very small button right next to the 'forward' button of the browser. There's a similar 'proxy on/off' plugin for Firefox (under the name 'Quickproxy', with the toggle located at the status bar), and it's really very convenient.

Macula: Just to clarify; Paper's own browser within the Paper's program works faultlessly. I can login, browse to the library within the Uni site and do searches etc. Also it is the same when using a normal browser. Although I am going to contact the tech department at the OU, it does seem strange that there is no problem logging in with other browsers and also Papers. I don't really want to purchase Papers at this point as Bookends does everything else I want except for this:-(

macula: I had copied and pasted the same ez proxy email address direct into the settings in both Papers and Bookends.

Jon and all.

Sorry for the delay. The OU did reply quickly but my health problems got in the way of replying here on the forum. Sadly the gist of the reply was because it is not a "supported" software there was not much they could do to help. I did pursue it about the "Serial Solutions" but not had anything back concrete, they have more or less thrown the ball back in your court:-(

I still maintain that if I can login using other software's browser such as Papers and do a search etc in my StudentHome library, then surely I should be able to do that in any bibliography software? I have also done a google search of the Serial Solutions error but not been able to find anything. I will also send another email to the OU about Serial Solutions as they did not give me an explanation of what or who they are. i.e. some sort of gateway or whatever.

Hope my comments are not taken the wrong way above but I am just so perplexed that I have no problems with one bibliography software browser but I do with Bookends. This doesn't detract that I still love the program and do intend buying it after a forthcoming holiday.

As an afterthought: I noticed that on some searches if I wanted to save a citation and/or pdf I was instructed to do a save as from the file menu. Neither Bookends or Papers have a toolbar to do this so in a lot of cases I have to end up using the "open with browser" function anyway. Not a criticism, just an observation as I thought all citations and pdf's could be saved/downloaded directly. Of course if I have missed something feel free to correct me as there is a lot to learn and I am new to all this.

Thanks again for your help

Hi,

I can't say what's going on, because I have no idea exactly what Papers is doing. But I can say that EZProxy is a pretty easy to implement, and it's working for the vast majority of people who are using it. The fact that it works with some sites for you and not others points to the likelihood that there is, as Macula said, local configuration that needs to be done.

You can download any pdf you are viewing (or a web page for that matter) by dragging and dropping the pdf proxy icon shown in Bookends browser (that's the small dotted rectangle). Drop on a Bookends window to download and attach to the selected reference, or to the Finder (desktop) to get the pdf to download without attaching it. You can also right-click on the proxy icon for a few additional options.

I have had a reply from the OU about my references/questions about Serial Solutions. My replies are also included....... "Serial Solutions provides the One Stop Search facility which is available from the bottom of the Library home page. Is this what you are searching to find your references? Are you then trying to export your references from One Stop to Bookends or copying and pasting the url? One Stop Search is referred to as 360 Search on the Serial Solutions websitehttp://www.serialssolutions.com/.

Yes, what happens is that I use Bookends own browser within the program. I can access information from the various options on the right such as subject. It is like you say, the One Stop Search that is the problem.

It may be better for you to go to an individual database and then export references from that into Bookends, if One Stop Search is causing a problem.

Yes, this I can do no problem if using a normal browser. The benefits of using Bookends own browser is I can download whatever I need straight into the program.

Please note that we are in the process of replacing One Stop Search. Within the next week or so you will see a link to a resource called One Stop Discovery, which is supplied by EBSCOhost. You can find more about this Discovery Service on the EBSCOhost website at http://www.ebscohost.com/. Once One Stop Discovery has passed through the pilot stage it will replace One Stop Search............

I have replied to the effect that I will see if it makes any difference when they go over to EBSCOhost and their Discovery Service. I will of course let you know.

Thank you Jon for the information about dragging the pdf files. I didn't realise it was that easy :P
