You mean an option for something like Copy Citation as Link? That might result in a link that looks like

{Smith, 2025 #12343@45}

If so, why? You can't paste it as a link in Word -- Word won't accept it. And if you paste it into a text processor it will appear as a markdown link, which isn't fit for scanning. So if I understand you correctly, please provide a real world example where this would be useful.

Yes, exactly. I work in Scrivener, and the following process works:
  • Copy notecard with link: Derrida, Jacques. Specters of Marx— The State of the Debt, the Work… .pdf, p. 7
  • Copy notecard citation: {Derrida, 2006 #30963@7}
  • Merge the link into the citation text to get {Derrida, 2006 #30963@7}
This is a link that will take me to the card upon clicking in Scrivener (or other text editor). If I export this file from Scrivener (or other text processor) into Word, I can both click the link and compile the bibliography.

So it would simply need to retain the format of the citation and add the link to it. Also, because I don't understand the logic behind why the link should be formatted in any other way than the citation is.

I hope I explained it well enough. I would really love this to work as I believe most authors use the notes in this way now.

Rene

You did. The link is formatted the way it is because it gives you a lot of useful information, far more than the temp cite -- the PDF name, page number, and even part of the highlighted text. It's not for scanning, it's for note taking and cross-referencing.

OK, I can see how that would be useful in this example and perhaps others. I'll see what I can do.

Indisputably, there is some extra information (the title of the cited work); however, if the reader who did not write the text needs to be satisfied with the citation, the writer should be far more so. Also, before the citation, we almost always have the cited text or the paraphrase of the thought. So there is not too much value in having parts of the text in the link. The page of the notecard or citation is included in the citation too.

Furthermore, if we want to remind ourselves about what work it was taken from, we only need one click on the citation :) I am sure authors would appreciate this little tweak.

Thank you for your replies and all the best with your work on your great software!
