replacing hyphen by en-dash

Hi,
Until now, I have entered page ranges of journal articles and other resources requiring this using the hyphen key ("23-34"). Now, I see that I should have used an en-dash instead ("23–34"), because this would be typographically correct. So, I tried to do a global change in my database. However, this doesn't seem to work the way I thought it would. First, I can't enter an en-dash in the replace-field, and, second, Bookends even seems to be unable to find the hyphens in the pages field.
Is there a way to handle this replacement workflow properly?
Thanks,
Matthias
