Ffrr Full Text search option?

Hi,

When using the internet search function, is it possible add a field for free full text only (where appropriate, such as for pub med searches?).

I have access to EBSCO via my university's library but I don't think I can access that database with Bookends directly and I'd rather not have to alternate between Safari and Bookends when searching.

The generic PubMed search is free text already. And in the Bookends advanced PubMed search, the default is for "any field" (i.e. full text).

Why can't you connect to EBSCO via Bookends? If they have a z39.50 server, you should be able to. Ask your library for connection details, and create a filter in Bookends that uses that information (Internet tab in the filter).

Many of my BE-based pubmed search results do not contain links to free full text articles. Some don't contain any linked articles, some contain linked articles that require paid subscription and some contain linked full-text articles at no charge.

Did I misunderstand that the default pubmed search is for articles that have free (no cost) full text versions linked to them?

For example, if I search for "fatty acids" in Title, "stress" in Title, "omega 6" in any field and filter for "human" I get, among a few others, an abstract with a link to a full text article but it is a pay or subscription service.

Perhaps it's a pubmed thing?

If so, am I doing something wrong?

Oh, you meant "free" as in no cost. No, you can't restrict searches that way.

You can set that limiter via a pubmed preference when searching on pubmed (there's a check box for "links to free full text".

Papers can do "free" full text searches as an availability option so I assume it's possible.

Would it be possible to add that option to the query in the future?

I know you are quite busy but it would be a very convenient search attribute.

I know. I tried it on PubMed, and the first hit I got pointed to a paid-for pdf. That is, it didn't work. Do you find it works for you?

I just ran a query for free full text (linked) and 'nutrition' and 'hyperactivity' in Papers and on Pubmed.

Both turned up the same articles. I didn't verify the free full text articles through pubmed's links but it did appear to work.

I don't recall following a link to a free full text article and finding a pay-only download at the other end.

IMO, it would make a nice addition to BE.

I'm not against adding this at all. But I wouldn't bother if the feature didn't work. I just tried on PubMed limited to the search to free text articles and searched for CD45. The first hit was for a paper in Stem Cells -- restricted. The next three were available for free. Seems that it's not foolproof. Anyway, I'll look into adding it.
