Every time I startup Bookends I have to redefine, which Word processor it is connected to. In Preferences->General it shows only Chinese stuff where "Microsoft Word" should be. Anyone else with this problem?

Since the problem here is with Preferences, you should remove them (Bookends 9 Preferences) from the Preferences folder and relaunch Bookends. A fresh preferences file will be created.
