This post is only related to Bookends insofar as I think some will find it useful. If you are looking for increased access to menu items via the keyboard, this may be for you.
With Quicksilver (one of the best applications for the Mac in my opinion) you can create shortcut keys for menu items in Mellel (or any application for that matter), or for access to all of the menu items in a list. Either way, it is all keyboard accessable.
Take a look at the VODcast for a demo of it in action. I hope it helps some who have desired increased keyboard control over Mellel.

Reiner,
My apologies, my post was ambiguous. You are right, you cannot create a hotkey in Quicksilver for a single menu item, so I misspoke. but you can create a hotkey to immediately open Quicksilver with all of the menu items of the front application. So launching a menu choice should take approx. 4-5 keystrokes at most.
Sorry about the miscommunication.
