I like the nice little ability to have bookmarks for commonly used databases on the net. However, it still takes as much time to get to Bookends>file>open URL>select bookmark menu>choose bookmark>open, as it does to simply switch to Safari and open the bookmark for it.

Can I suggest that this become a submenu with the bookmarks listed. Clicking them from the menu will launch it immediately. This would mean two mouse-clicks rather than 5.


I would like to request a similar thing for the OpenURL search. It is a great new feature for those of us who don't have the good fortune of a database like pubmed. But there are a number of openURL searches that I would like to access. ISI does a good job for some and not others. The CrossRef openurl search is excellent, except for articles that don't yet have DOI's. And more openurl servers will pop up over time i imagine.

Personally, I would prefer a mechanism that allows users to create their 'own' URLs for specific searches. These URLs could be created as specific reference formats and then referred to by their name in the Bookends File/Open URL... menu. As Danzac suggested, this menu should become hierarchical and allow keyboard shortcuts for maybe 10 URLs. This way everyone can have his/her preferred searches and Jon is not forced to refuse requests for web sites/search engines that are only of interest for a minority of users. In the end full scriptability (Applescript) of Bookends would permit personal adaptation/interactivity and prevent overcrowded menus for everyone else.
