can't scan a doc

Sorry if this is a repost...

I'm new to word for mac 2004 (still on trial version...waiting for official copy to arrive) and also new to bookends (was an endnote user). I've successfully imported a few databases into bookends, but when I go to scan a doc, it won't let me select the file I want to format. Word has been selected under preferences in bookends. Interestingly, if I save the word doc as a .rtf, then I can scan a doc and the bibliography is formatted.

Why do I have to work in .rtf? Shouldn't I be able to scan a word.doc? Is it because my word for mac is a trial version? Anyone else having this problem?

Scanning of Word documents is from inside Word, using the Bookends toolbar or the Bookends items in the Tools menu. (See the Bookends manual, from about page 109.)

If these don't display in Word you need to make sure that the Bookends Word add-in is installed properly. There's a read-me file with Bookends that tells you how to do this, I think.

I don't know if there are any specific issues with the Office 'test-drive' demo and Bookends.

Hi,

nicka's response is correct. Scan from within Word using the Bookends toolbar or Tools -> Bookends menu options.

Thanks everyone. Working great now. Just didn't know anything about add-ins (again, very new user to mac). But smooth sailing now.

Since you are new to Word 2004, and using the test-drive, I will point you towards some advice about that, off the topic of this thread.

Apparently if you don't uninstall the test-drive before installing the full version there can be all kinds of weird problems. See http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default.as ... fice2004td for instructions.

If you have any problems with or questions about Word in the future -- except for Bookends related ones, of course, which can be dealt with here -- I thoroughly recommend the microsoft.public.mac.office.word newsgroup: http://groups.google.com/group/microsof ... fice.word/

Thanks nicka! I'm sure you just saved me a ton of frustration.
