steps to importing an .rtf bibliography

I'm trying to scan electronic bibliographies (.rtf) into Bookends 10. All elements are tagged, and I know it can work because a programmer friend successfully did it with one file. Problem is we can't remember how he did it! I use Word & have successfully installed the Bookends add-ons. I've read the key pages in the docs, then tried several times and ways -- from Word, from Bookends. But no success so far. Since there is not "a recipe" in the docs (first do this, then do this, then . . . .), I'm wondering if someone can help?
Thanks!

Hi,

Bookends can, in some limited cases, import an existing bibliography. See our User Guide (search for "existing"). But it must be saved as a text file. Bookends can't read .rtf files.
