Bookends + Papers

Post by macmelo »

Hi everybody,

I own both a copy of Bookends 10 and a copy of Papers (http://mekentosj.com/papers/) that I've bought before Bookends had the PDF visualizer. The truth is that until now I had no time to play with the combo (especially Papers), so I'm kind of uncertain of how should I approach the softwares...

As I understand it, both softwares are blind to each other's entries, right? So if I enter some form of note/info in Papers, Bookends won't be able to see it, right??? And vice versa...

Anyway, I would like some input from any other users who use these two softwares in combination, so that I can organize my workflow in the most efficient manner... Please, assume that I WANT to use Papers as a reader for my PDFs...

Thanks in advance,

We worked with the developer of Papers to come up with a direct export of Papers entries to Bookends (File -> Export -> Send To Bookends). That way you can collect PubMed references and pdfs in Papers, and then transfer them to Bookends if you want to cite them in papers. As you say, Bookends has a pdf viewer now, but if you want to use Papers for this that's how I would use Papers with Bookends.

Hi Jon,

Amazingly fast as ever...

Exactly what will be trasfered from Papers to Bookends through this export? For example, I won't be able to see (in Bookends) if a reference has a PDF, will I???
Right now, I'm playing with this feature to see how it behaves...

Thanks...

EDIT:
Just tested with a couple of references (Papers > Bookends) and Bookends shows the attachment... Great...

Hi,

Right. Bookend wills find the pdf attachment exported from Papers (it will leave it where Papers put it, not move it to the Bookends attachments folder).

One more question:

I noticed that the "Send to Bookends" in Papers can't update references that are already imported in Bookends... Is there any way I could use Papers to annotate a reference already imported in Bookends, updating the notes so that they show up in Bookends as well???

If this is not possible today, is there any chance the "Send to Bookends" function will be updated in a near future??? BTW, are you the responsible for the export plug-in or are the folks at mekentosj???

Jon

I'm uncertain about how I should go from Bookends to Papers, to read the PDF of an article already imported in Bookends... Is it possible to open the attachment directly in Papers without changing the global preference for PDFs????

If the reference has already been exported to Bookends, Bookends will treat it as a duplicate if you try to export it again (this is meant as a feature). You can always export from Papers as EndNote XML and import that into Bookends the normal way.

We worked with mekentosj to implement the direct export feature, but the plug-in was written (and is maintained) by them.

Hi,

There is no automated flow from Bookends -> Papers. The idea was that Papers might be used to collect references and pdfs, but that the information would have to move to Bookends for using in a paper. You should be able, I think, to export from Bookends as xml and import that into Papers (I haven't tested this).

Jon,

I guess I wasn't clear... When I said "go from Bookends to Papers", what I meant was that I wanted to go to Papers to read and take notes in the PDF... I still want to keep using Bookends to manage my references... in other words, is there any way to make the attachments button in Bookends automatically open the attached PDF inside Papers, so that I could do my reading there????

No. Bookends has no idea that Papers even exists, and vice versa (except that it will attempt an export, if you ask). If you have an attachment in Bookends, it will open in Bookends. If you want to read it in Papers, open it in Papers. BTW, in Bookends 10.0.02 you'll be able to drag and drop the pdf image (in Bookends) onto the Papers icon in the dock, which will open it in Papers. Perhaps that is what you want.

I'm guessing this is what I want...
The drag and drop will not change anything about the reference in either Papers or Bookends, right??? Papers will just be used as a PDF reader???
If this is it, great!!!

Just to make sure I'm not missing something: Is there ANY advantage to using Papers in conjunction with the new and improved Bookends?

Jon,
will this same type of thing (dropping PDF on the dock icon) work for Devonthink, and perhaps Skim for those who use it?

Hi,

Sure. It works with any application that is set to open a pdf.
