Groups issue

Post by noumenal »

I just experienced some weird issues with groups (running BE 10.1.1 on OS X 10.5.1).

I have 9 folders, with a series of static groups inside - each containing anything from 3 to around 150 references.

I was renaming, using colons and dashes, titles not that long, and moving static groups into existing and new folders that I created.

The first thing that happened was that 7 of the folders disappeared, and 'became' static groups within the other 2 folders. The groups that had previously been folders were empty. Relaunching Bookends fixed this - the groups went back to how they had been.

Opening again, however, the problem happened again, and this time, groups which previously contained references appeared empty.

Unfortunately I don't have time right now to try and replicate the problem, and I didn't try rebuilding because I had a recent backup and I need to get on with something fairly urgently.

So - the point of my message right now is really - are there known issues with groups and should I be avoiding things like colons, titles of a certain length, having too many groups in one folder, too many folders, etc.?

There are no known issues. I've had rare reports where the group tags (internal for Bookends use only) got scrambled with resulting disappearance of the group (although it's still in the database). But no one has been able to start with a good db and reproduce it. If you can do this, please let me know. BTW, rebuilding wouldn't help, because the groups are in a different table from the references.

Hello Noumenal,

As Jon says this seems to be a rare thing. It happened to me also in a similar way (moving groups around, dropping groups on a folder) but I could never reproduce.

Just to let you know I used the following method to create a new db:
- i selected the references in each group and than gave them a unique name which i added to the notes field with the Global Change > Change Field command from the Refs menu.
- i rebuilt the old db without keeping the user settings
- i searched for each unique name and turned the hits into groups again with the New Static Group command

Perhaps this helps. I should say that this has never happened afterwards.

Best,
Gerben
