format: conditional field output

If I have not missed something it is not possible to output database fields conditional. I would like to output a field in a format only if the preceding field is empty.

Is this already possible?

If not is there a chance that we see this feature in one of the next updates?

thanks and best regards.

There's no mechanism for this in a single format. You could, of course, create a new type and assign that to cases where a particular field was empty and create a format for it accordingly.

Hi Jon,

thanks for your answer.

Do you see a chance that this will be introduced in one of the next updates?

(Creating additional types is a possibility but not the very best for my item: I would like to output the original date in the citaions instead of the date of the actual publication. This would mean I have to add another 10 types. But I don't have that much types free. Also it would make the database a bit complicated to have a different type if the only difference is if there is a original date or not.)

Hi Reiner,

To be frank, given that such a feature would add even more complexity to formatting and that I imagine it would be used by very few, it's not something I'm enthusiastic about.

Hi Jon,

thanks again although your answer doesn't make me happy. :(

But now I would be much interested in hearing opinions of other users on this request: Would it be of any interest for you to be able to output fields in formats conditional (e. g. output only if preceding field is empty)?
