Hello, Bookends' preferences allow users to select one of two formats to "cite by" -- (1) Content; (2) author, date, ID.

I'm curious, what do others use and why: What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? In a large thesis project with lots of citations, what would those who've been there and done that recommend?

I'll let others contribute as well, but there's a third option, too: cite by format. But if you use this you should create a *new* format that results in unique citations, otherwise you'll get ambiguous citation warnings when you scan. So I'd recommend only reasonably experienced Bookends users try this.

Thanks Jon. My experience is mixed:
1) the CONTENT is easy to reference in your library, but it can yield ambiguous results.

2) the UNIQUE ID is bullet proof (i.e., no ambiguity), but I have a terrible time trying to figure out the reference (when the same author has numerous entires in my database)

I'm anxious to learn what others do in long documents with large databases.

You know you can create your own citation format and include the unique ID, right?
