I understand that when importing from an online search, the default is to replace references in the Hits List, and that these can be retained by pressing Option. Would it be possible to have a preference setting somewhere to control this action? My default is to not replace references and would like to be able to do this without having to remember to press option--the disastrous results of not pressing option need not be mentioned. I understand others might prefer the way things are, but a setting in preferences (or somewhere) would allow both sides to be happy.

To be honest, I don't think this is important enough issue to devote a preference to (there are hundreds of such options that are at the same level). By default imported references are *not* made hits (you have to check "Import to Hits List" to get that to happen). An alternative for you, if you don't want to use the Option key, is to import directly into a static group (that you can manage independently after the import).
